A Historic Beginning
Lewis County, located in the heart of West Virginia, was established from parts of Harrison County by the Virginia General Assembly on December 18, 1816. Named in honor of Colonel Charles Lewis (1733-1774), who fell in the Battle of Point Pleasant during Lord Dunmore’s War, the county proudly carries his legacy. The county seat, Weston, was officially incorporated by the West Virginia Legislature in 1913.
Early Settlers & Founding
In 1769, William Hacker, Thomas Hughes, Jesse Hughes, John Radcliff, William Radcliff, and John Brown became the first English explorers to arrive in what is now Lewis County. John Hacker established the first permanent European settlement by building a cabin south of modern-day Berlin. This settlement, known as Hackers Creek, was followed by cabins built by John and William Radcliff in 1770. Other early settlers included Jesse Hughes, John Whendy, Francis Tibbs, and Daniel Veach.
Notable Settlements & Landmarks
Lewis County is home to historic landmarks such as Jackson’s Mill and Stonewall Jackson Lake. Jackson’s Mill, the boyhood home of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, is renowned for its connection to the Confederate general, who earned his famous moniker during the First Battle of Bull Run. Stonewall Jackson Lake, completed in 1990 as part of the Flood Control Act of 1966, honors General Jackson’s legacy and his significant ties to the county.
